Rio(Brando) and Dad(Karl Malden) ar two bank robbers on the run from the federales in Mexico, so they are pinned down and Dad takes off with the money and leaves Rio to be captured and sent to 5 years in a mexican jail. When he escapes, he goes in search of Dad, finding him in Monterey, California, where Dad is now a tough Sheriff and has a beautiful step-daughter, Louisa. The action and the romance heat up as Rio is bent on revenge and falls for the beautiful Louisa.
