hey Hey Its Esther Blueburger
Movie Info
Sometimes to fit in you have to stand out.
Hey Hey Its Esther Blueburger is a coming of age comedy that explores what its really like to be outsider in your own world. Esther (newcomer Danielle Catanzariti) is not like other girls; she befriends a duck, talks to God through the toilet and break-dances at her bat-mtizvah. Her all-girls private school is a daily torment of mind-numbing conformity and bell-ringing rituals.
Home is a pressure cooker driven by her mother Grace\'s(Essie Davis) demand for perfection. But life changes when Esther meets Sunni(Keisha Castle-Hughes) and her mother Mary(Toni Collette). She learns that its ok to be different and being true to yourself is more important than fitting in.

Review:
Hey, hey its Esther Blueburger is a coming of age, journey of discovery for 13 year old Jewish Esther, as a starting point for her to start her journey, she is an oddball, she keeps to herself, talks to god through the toilet and befriends a baby duck. She is an outcast and bullied at school and has no friends and things are no better at home, her mum is oblivious to her problems and she feels just as isolated.
Enter Sunni (expertly played by Keisha Castle-Hughes who shows a robust maturity in her assertive, assured teenage role) as a sort of guide to all things wild and wonderful, she bonds with Esther and shows her a lighter and freer side of life. Esther begins to feel confident and happy, breaking her barriers and acting on impulse, though not without its downside, she eventually turns into an aggressive and self-centred.
Sunni doesn’t like the person Esther has become and causes a rift between them, what lets this film down is the final part of the film, events cause Esther to come to terms with who she really is and whether popularity is worth sacrificing who you really are?
A contemporary look at alienation, social integration, self discovery and expression, Hey, hey its Esther Blueburger offers up a multitude of perspectives which will charm and speak to everyone watching.
