A Farewell To Arms
FilmLounge.com rating:
Ernest Hemingways tragic story was first brought to the screen in 1932 by Frank Borzage in a surprising sophisticated and respectful form. The director brilliantly alternated objectives and subjectives camarawork(for which Charles Lang won an Oscar) and obtains superior performances from his leading players, Helen Hayes as the British nurse and the sublimely handsome and charming American Ambulance driver, Gary Cooper.

Review:
A Farewell To Arms adapts Ernest Hemingways classic wartime romance into pictorial form, providing beautiful scenes and emotional depth to his story.

Gary Cooper is Ambulance driver Frederic Henry, an American enlisted in the Italy Corp, set behind a war-torn country, Henry falls in love with English nurse Catherine Barkley played by Helen Hayes and a compelling ill fated romance begins between the two. The film concentrates on the bleak situation surrounding the two though sometimes assuming large sequences out of the book, the cast is sublime as Coopers tall charming figure is ever present next to Hayes petite feminine form.

Overall a farewell to arms is well acted with a strong support cast and boost many touching moments, this film is far better than the remakes that follow it.
