Night Junkies
FilmLounge.com rating:
Every city has its junkies, and London is no different. But we’re not just talking needle freaks and alchis here. In Lawrence Pierce’s twisted vision of the capitol there is a new breed of addict prowling the streets, but they don’t want to score some skag, they want your blood. So yes, we’re talking vampires. But these aren’t the glossy creased-forehead kind, with fangs, capes and an aversion to holy water – as Vincent (Anderson) says, all it’ll do is get you wet – these are just normal people who’ve fallen foul of a quick neck bite in an alley, and are left to roam the Earth for all eternity, feeding on hapless victims every day in an effort to survive. One such nightwalker, who is less than happy with his lot, is Vincent; every night he tries to avoid the urge to feed, only to find himself dumping another body in the Thames in the early hours. Then he meets Ruby, an erotic dancer who hates her job, her boss and men in general. Unable to stop himself, he turns her into a bloodsucker, falls in love with her and then vows to quit the habit. And for once, it seems as if life could be worth living again. That is until a remnant of Ruby’s past returns to haunt her, leading to a visceral and bloody conclusion.

Review:
These days it’s impossible to have a male vampire unless he’s brooding, square-jawed and deadly serious. In that respect, Night Junkies delivers, as 6’ 2” hunkmeister Giles Anderson smoulders on screen, personifying the later day incarnation of Bram Stoker’s most famous creation. But while he gives the likes of David Boreanaz (of TV’s Buffy and Angel series) a run for his money, this is anything but a light-hearted vampire love story. Beating in the chest of this debut feature for hot newcomer Pearce is a vicious heart which not only consumes the allegory of drug addiction and vampire mythology, but also uses it to highlight the fact that people – whether addicts or not – can be either good or evil. It’s down to the person, not whether or not they chomp on the odd straggler now and then. Nothing highlights this more than the incredible performance put in by Zagger who is quite frankly fucking frightening as a sadistic psychopath who manages to simmer in normal company, only boiling over when his violent urges become too much. Made for just half a million quid, this slick drama looks like money well spent. Performances are more than adequate across the board and Pearce shows tremendous promise as a writer and director to look out for. Must be Scene: You have to hope (for his loved one’s sake) that Zagger isn’t a method actor as he goes completely off the boil in a gruesome and terrifying beating scene, all of which ends with him literally licking the wounds. And they’re not even his!
