The One Armed Boxer II
FilmLounge.com rating:
Having fought and killed two expert assassins, one-armed martial arts teacher Liu Ti Lung (Wang) finds himself on the hit list of the legendary Fung (Kam), a blind swordsman who is a master of the deadly ‘Flying Guillotine’. As Fung begins his quest, he soon discovers that one-armed kung-fu experts are more common than you’d think, leading to an amputee-killing spree that leads him to an intense (and deadly) martial arts competition. It’s here that we find our one-armed man, having decided to enter the competition at the behest of his army of loyal students. He’s not what you’d expect though; as mild-mannered as Clark Kent yet as skilled as Spider-Man (he can balance on the edge of a wicker basket and walk on the ceiling!) Luckily for him, the merciless Fung accidentally decapitates the wrong limbless competitor, blowing his cover and alerting the legendary One Armed Boxer to his presence. Understanding that, to defeat Fung, he will have to find a way to debilitate his deadly guillotine, Liu lays plans for a final showdown that will prove once and for all, who is the best disabled martial arts master of the East.

Review:
Despite it’s ridiculous title (although, to be fair, we like those at Film Lounge), this is actually a real martial arts classic. Yes, it’s full of ridiculously moustachioed masters and impossible kung fu tricks – arms that can extend to 10 feet and Liu’s wall-crawling antics among the best examples – but decades of seeing this sort of thing being sent up only makes this more enjoyable. The action is first rate, full of good old fashioned hand-to-hand (or foot-to-face) combat that made martial arts such a World-wide phenomenon. Wire-work and camera tricks are kept to a minimum (although there is the odd moment when someone is kicked through the roof of a building) in favour of real kick-ass action. The most ingenious inclusion by far is the Flying Guillotine itself, a lethal weapon that literally decapitates at about 50 yards. Seeing the hapless headless victims running around immediately afterwards is almost worth the price of download alone. Aside from all of this, easily the most memorable thing about this movie, is the amazing dubbing. It’s not so much the loose lip-sync that’s hilarious, but the bizarre choice of accents which include ‘saaf Lundun’ cockney and even Welsh! All of which provides a great combo of all-round entertainment. Must see Scene: The prolonged training sequence is a must, as seemingly endless duos enter the ring, fighting to the death (or at the very least, some serious maiming). Before Fung turns up in typically dramatic style and starts pulling heads.
